It sounds like the HD installation went OK. However, since
you booted BL2 from floppies to do the installation, there is
nothing currently on the HD (DOS partition) to boot the kernel.

No. The installation routine does not touch your DOS partition.
For most users, boot.bat is already on the DOS partition (because
they originally booted BL2 from that partition, instead of using
the floppies).

Since you booted from floppies, you will need to copy zimage and
loadlin.exe from the floppies to the DOS partition. Then use a
DOS editor to create an appropriate boot.bat. For example, if
you installed BasicLinux to /dev/hda3, then boot.bat will look
like this:
--------------------------------
loadlin zimage root=/dev/hda3 ro
--------------------------------
