Thanks Andrew, you diagnozed that problem well. By the time I
got up this morning and read Kent's question, you had already
answered it.

Good advice. I keep a few spare ones in /etc in case I switch
video cards/monitors (eg. XF86Config.vga, XF86Config.s3).

I've never used xfm (or any other X file manager) on BasicLinux,
but if anybody wants it, the package is in /slakware/xap1
