I confirm that Slakware 3.5 gcc won't work on BL2 (if you already have it on
a BL1 system, you can try it on BL2 by booting from a floppy etc.). I have
to use BL1 because I don't have room for the libraries needed by the later
version of gcc.

FYI, I run NASM (Netwide ASseMbler) on BL1, despite the fact that it
requires libc6, by copying libc.so.6 and ld-linux.so.2 into /lib from BL2.
For anybody interested in assembly programming, NASM is easy to learn and
use and has versions which run on 16/32 bit DOS/Win as well as Linux.
