In an xterminal, you can set the font directly. For example:

xterm -font 12x24
-----------------
will use a big font (giving you approx. 65 columns, 22 lines).
At the other extreme, you could use 4x6 (which gives you twice
as many columns/rows). There are many font types/sizes available
in /usr/X11R6/lib/fonts. The simplest ones are in the the misc
directory.
