In the meantime I checked out Hotmail with Opera. It works with my
computer but Opera takes up 14M RAM and X another 3 and he has 8M. I
suggested getting some laptop computer on eBay with 16M RAM, which might
be cheaper than finding extra RAM for his thinkpad.

X Server on the laptop sounds like the best way to go.
