Finally managed to get 1.8 installed on the hd. I would like to upgrade to 2.x as this is a Pentium 100 with 500 mb. This machine has no Internet connection and no DOS

How are you booting? From a DOS floppy? Or LILO?

LILO

I have changed the kernel to the one from BL 2.03. What next? Do I need to uninstall libc5? If so, how?

Normally I would suggest installing 2.03 from scratch
-- there is no simple upgrade from BL1 to BL2. However,
if your system is unable to boot BL2 (ramdisk version),
we might be able to figure out an alternative method.
What exactly is your situation, what problem do you
have using the normal BL2?

My problem with BL2 was that I couldn't get 2mf to work when running make_fd . I downloaded the files using Linux, then switched to Windows95 on the same machine to unzip them, then closed down Windows and rebooted in DOS to run the programs. 2mf failed me every time. Should I have booted DOS using F8? I don't think I can, because LILO starts up. Anyway, as someone pointed out, I wouldn't then have been able to use the second floppy on another machine unless it was running 2m. In the end, as I say, with a bit of juggling and editing, several mistakes and a lot of luck, I've got BL1.8 running and LILO working. And I've switched kernels. Ideally, I was thinking of installing Abiword, Opera and ImageMagick, but would like to use more recent versions of everything than 3.1. I've had almost a year to mess about with Linux so I've got a vague idea of the basics and a healthy addiction to caffeine. I can transfer everything by CD. If I knew what exactly to keep so that the basic kept working, I could happily rip everything else out, which would be more or less like starting from scratch.
TIA
Andrew
