No problems at all with external modems that I know of. In fact, if this
chap has one, he'll be in good shape. These are usually "hardware modems"
that work well with Linux - no special software or drivers such as are
needed with winmodems. But having to carry around an external modem sort
of conflicts with the whole idea of having a notebook - it's supposed to
be compact and portable. Having an external modem means an extra part
(plus its subparts - power supply and serial cable) to have to carry
around. Anyway, if he does have an external modem any potential problems
with connecting to the ISP should be obviated.

OK, I have some progress to report. I've tried running
Opera 6.11 on a generic Slackware 7.1 installation. I
get exactly the same problem as in BL2. So the problem
does not lie specifically in BL2 -- it's a Slackware
problem. I'm surprised this fault is not more widely
known. Perhaps people had already moved to Slackware 8.0
by the time Opera 6.11 came out? I spend half an hour on
google trying to find any reference to problems running
Opera 6.11 on Slack71. The only one I found related to
GLX (which, I think, has something to do with 3D video).

Since 6.11 didn't work on Slack71, I decided to download
5.05. It installed very smoothly and appears to work fine.
No sign of the 6.11 problem. I actually prefer 5.05. It
is smaller than 6.11 and has a cleaner layout. Whether this
means it is faster, I don't know. Web pages seemed to be
downloading more slowly than 6.11, but that could just be
time-of-day.

I have only spent a few minutes on 5.05, so I need to do a
lot more testing. But before I do, I want to make sure that
5.05 is going to do what people need. It seems to do HTTPS
and javascript OK. What things can 6.11 do that 5.05 can't?
Does anybody know of problems in 5.05?

Cheers,
Steven
