We have a couple of 486s of this age (one has 2M RAM, the other does not
usually work so cannot try BL on them) and they do NOT have PCMCIA. We
plug in an external modem via the serial port. Is there any problem in
using an external modem with BL?

There are lots of free webmail sites around and you can most likely find
one that does not require java or javascript. I use Lynx or Links with
email.seznam.cz. They recently changed to requiring that you be able to
view graphics for the sign in, and Netscape 4 won't work to sign in, but
Lynx or Links with a viewer might do it. Yahoo also works (or worked,
anyway) with Lynx (but it is a pain because of all the commercials).

You can also telnet to my free bbs and use Lynx there faster than via a
modem. Telnet is included with BL.
