Which 10 key books/journals/authors would you say is an absolute must for the

Dear Hebrew Group,

at the risk of me sounding a bit impractical, could there be just a very slim
possibility that just maybe, the Hebrew psalms together with their original
melodies/tunes, the way that for eg David sang them upon his stringed
instruments, could perhaps possibly have survived until this day?

--so that we can truly say, "I will si-ing as Da-vid sang"?

Professor Yigal Levin:

1. I agree completely with virtually everything you say in your post.
[The only exception is that, as noted near the end of this post, I reject any
proposal that there may possibly have been two unattested Aijalons in
southern hill country.]

2. Based on my prior posts, let’s assume now that there were two places on
the southern edge of the Aijalon Valley [with such valley itself having no
formal name in the ancient world] whose names were “Oak Tree City”. That
makes sense, as the southern edge of the Aijalon Valley had a magnificent row
of oak trees that separated the Aijalon Valley from the Sorek Valley. We
know from the Amarna Letters that for the famous city of Aijalon in the
southeast Aijalon Valley, the yod was pronounced as a consonant and a
separate
syllable, ai-ya-lu-na, based on Amarna Letter EA 273: 20. But the yod may
have been dropped [either routinely or at least on occasion, with an interior
yod in these types of Biblical names often dropping out on occasion, as shown
in my prior posts on this thread] in the name of the tiny town to the west
on the southern edge of the Aijalon Valley, perhaps to distinguish it from
the famous Aijalon. So the two names in the southerly Aijalon Valley were
)LN and )YLN, both meaning “Oak Tree City”, and being the two
“Aijalons”.
In the Amarna Letters, the entire Aijalon Valley is dominated by an Amorite
princeling ruler whose historical name was Milk-Ilu, and whose Biblical
nickname could appropriately be “Mamre”.

If the author wanted to say that Abraham sojourned by the two Aijalons that
were dominated by Mamre, then we would expect masculine construct plural.
Wouldn’t the expected form be exactly what we see in the received text?
)LNY MMR).

I see )LNY MMR) as having both of the following two meanings: “oak trees
of Mamre” a-n-d “Aijalons of Mamre”. In order for this appropriate
double
meaning to be generated, reflecting (i) )LWN [or )LN in defective spelling]
as a common word meaning “oak tree”; and (ii) )LN as the name of a tiny
town on the southern edge of the Aijalon Valley meaning “Oak Tree City”
[which, most appropriately, is the name of one of Jacob’s grandsons, per
Genesis
46: 14]; and (iii) )YLN, as the name meaning “Oak Tree City” of the
famous Aijalon on the southeast corner of the Aijalon Valley, the expected
masculine construct plural form is precisely what we see in the received
text:
)LNY.

I can easily handle all of the geographical and textual and logical and
historical arguments for the Patriarchs sojourning in the eastern half of the
Aijalon Valley. [For example, the name XBRWN is not attested in Canaan prior
to the late 8th century BCE, and at that time the XBRN seals seem to be
referencing the Shephelah, as over 300 XBRN seals were found in the
Shephelah,
while only 7 XBRN seals were found at the mountainous place in southern hill
country which, beginning only in post-exilic times per non-biblical
sources, eventually came to be called the city of Hebron.] The question I am
raising on the b-hebrew list, rather, is the question of the relevant Hebrew
grammar here. Does or does not the preceding analysis make sense
grammatically,
where I see “Aijalons of”, as masculine construct plural, being )LNY?

Please note that for my proposed grammatical analysis to work, the form is
p-l-u-r-a-l. Thus there must be two places called “Aijalon” in close
proximity to each other. Per Joshua 19: 42-43, that’s the Aijalon Valley,
a
place that was dominated by “oak trees”. Since oak trees were not
prominent
in southern hill country, it is highly unlikely that there were two places in
southern hill country named “Aijalon”, with both the Bible and
non-biblical sources totally missing both of them. Rather, Joshua 19: 42-43
testifies
to there being two Aijalons in the Aijalon Valley, with both of them being
located on the southern edge of the Aijalon Valley, where “oak trees”
were
extremely prominent. [The fact that the less famous Aijalon at Joshua 19: 43
is transliterated in English as “Elon”, with no yod, may reflect the
historical actuality that the yod in that tiny town’s name was often,
though not
always, dropped.] Moreover, the famous Aijalon on the east end of the
Aijalon Valley is the only place on planet Earth that in the Bronze Age is
explicitly stated to be near tent-dwellers who used writing: “the Apiru
wrote to
Ayyaluna”. Amarna Letter EA 273: 15-24. Are those tent-dwellers who wrote
to Aijalon the Biblical Patriarchs? It’s an exciting possibility, but
everything seems to be turning on a question of basic Hebrew grammar. Can
)LNY
MMR) at Genesis 13: 18 legitimately be viewed as referencing the “Aijalons
of
Mamre”? That’s the Hebrew grammar question I am raising on the b-hebrew
list.
