i hope the present grim thread will not ruin the festive/solemn
order of the coming days. anyway, i wish to comment on the dagesh in the
word HMYTM.

---------------------------

we are dealing with the root MWT: "xasar ´ayin", which ends in T.
in hifil.

----------------------------

in addition, there is a confusion here between two different suffixes:

-TEM (past second plural: you)

"YOU kill", which doubles the T

and

-AM (direct object, third plural: them)

"kill THEM", which does not double the T.

both Nu 17:6 and 1 Sam 2:25 are completely normal and represent orthodox
hebrew grammar, given the suffixes!

--------------------------------------

Nu 17:6:

MWT (hifil, past) + suffix -TEM --> HMYT-TEM --> HMTEM
with dagesh.

i see this as completely regular for this case. T is doubled, so the dagesh is
forced, hence yod drops.

modern hebrew would have HEMAT(E)TEM (as alternative to HARAGTEM), but HAMITEM
is completely within BH grammar.

----------------------------------------------

1 sam 2:25:

MWT (hifil, infinitive) + suffix -AM --> L-HMYT-AM
(no dagesh).

this too is completely regular for this case! T is not doubled, so no
dagesh is necessary, so yod does not drop.

Notice that in all these examples, to wit: qamtem, sartem, v'nastem,
(all, by the way, with a "delayed" dagesh in the T), the performer of
the act is also the receiver of the act. In HAMITEM of Nm. 17:6 the
perpetrators of the act MWT are MO$EH and AHARON, while its
"beneficiaries" are the people of Israel.
