To All:
Ps 31:12
מכל צררי הייתי חרפה ולשכני מאד ופחד למידעי ראי בחוץ נדדו ממני
Focussing on the two words, ולשכני מאד, I found myself following the context
to read ו-ל-שכנ-י “and to my dweller” i.e. one who dwells with me, neighbor.
But the second word, מאד, is a little bit more difficult. The normal reading
is of “exceeding”, “very”, but in this context, is this not a puel
participle from the same root as איד meaning “misfortune”? Doesn’t this fit
the context better than “exceedingly”?
Making the whole verse read, “I have become a reproach beyond all my foes,
and to my neighbors misfortune, and dread to my acquaintances, those who see
me outside fly from me.”
Or have I made an error?
Karl W. Randolph.
