Fred, I fail to see what the zaqef qatan has to do with it.

very interesting indeed; i had always thought that the promise of genesis
15:18 equals with precision the inheritance of numbers 34:2.

I suppose the zaqef qatan above בנחלה in numbers 34:2, becomes all important.
And here i thought that the little cantillation marks formed musical and
procedural matters, rather than boundaries of great substance ... :)

Now you raise a different question, which is that of the relationship between
the boundaries of the "promised land" in Gen. 15:18 (and other places), "from
the river of Egypt to the great river Euphrates" and the boundaries of "the
Land of Canaan" as described in Numbers 34 and other sources. I, for one, do
not think that they are identical.

Hello Yigal:

Thanks for your comments.

Nir had suggested lake hula for the vicinity of חצר עינן . But lake hula
seems far distant from this northern border.

ביום ההוא כרת יהוה את אברם ברית לאמר לזרעך נתתי את הארץ הזאת מנהר מצרים עד
הנהר הגדל נהר פרת

בראשית טו יח

Even baalbek seems a good bit south of the euphrates river.

Hi Fred,

The short answer is no. However, several of the places mentioned before and
after are known. In general, the northern border of Canaan seems to run north
of todays Baalbek in the central Beqaa Valley. Have a look at Yohanan
Aharoni's Land of the Bible or the Catra/MacMillan Bible Atlas.
