Indeed it was, until the conquest drove OE out of written use and forced
later generations to come to terms with English as she was spoke. For that
matter, chancery ME orthography was highly standardized, too, until the
Great Vowel Shift and the great extension of literacy to amateur writers
dealt the professionals a double whammy. It will be interesting to see
whether texting and lolspeak are equally disruptive, and accomplish what
Noah Webster and Bernard Shaw could not.
