The totality of Jim’s answer is based on a certain ideology, or religion in
common terms, that not all members of this list believe. For those who
believe different religions, the whole argument is rubbish from start to
finish. A recognition of the religious roots and aspects of this argument is
necessary for a proper understanding of it. This is not a linguistic answer,
but a theological one.
Within Biblical literature itself, there are references to the “salt sea”
connected with the Jordan River valley, as a separate body of water from the
“great sea” to the west of Canaan.
Ugarit, and other geographically separate societies, which may not have
knowledge of the Dead Sea, would use the terms differently.
