I would refer you to Bishop Joseph Barber Lightfoot, /St Paul's
Epistle to the Galatians,/ Tenth Edition 1890, reprint Macmillan's
London 1921, where there is an article on the Galatian people (pp 1-17),
and a dissertation /Were the Galatians Celts or Teutons?/ (pp 239-251).
Lightfoot suggests that the Galatians were the Gauls. They migrated
from Asia Minor up the Danube to Switzerland, and down the Rhone into
France (aka Gaul), and from thence across the English Channel to Ireland
and to Britain. The Franks came from Franconia and drove the Gauls into
Britanny (La Bretagne), and into Great Britain (La Grande Bretagne).
Wales is known as Pays de Galles in French. Cornwall used to be known
as South Wales until the Middle Ages. Welsh is cognate with Gaelic,
and with Osco-Umbrian still spoken in parts of northern Italy.
Against Barber's thesis it can be argued that Paul and his companions
could not understand the language of the Lycaonians (Acts 14:11). If the
Lycaonians were Gauls, and their language cognate with Hebrew, then Paul
and Barnabas could have possibly understood the gist of what was said.
Fascinating!
Shalom
Ben
