John:

"Opposite" or "against"? Could you be more specific?

Does this context not picture two people working together, while
facing each other? Hence "in front of" each other?

So from what I get from all this is that the word NGD is like the word $M
Just as $M has two distict meanings dependent on how it is used ("there"
and "name") so does NGD

Even these words can have a connection, as one 'places' a person by
his name, both being from the same root as #YM to place.

I now have another question regarding this word:

When it is first used in Genesis in the context of Eve I was always taught
that it meant "opposite" or "against".
I have never heard that it meant "in front of".
So could someone please explain how the idea of "in front of" fits in that
passage?

By the way, I appreciate all the input received thus far!

I do not list "against" or "opposite" as possible meanings for NGD as
those have connotations that go beyond the meaning of the Hebrew word
(a translator may use those terms when he thinks it will make for a
smoother English rendition, but a strict literal meaning is "before,
in front of").
