Harold,

May be, may be, Egyptian 'kem' is somehow related to the Hebrew (OK
semitic) XAM, 'hot', which common wisdom claims to be the progenitor
of XUM, 'dark brown---the color of hot ash and ember'. See Genesis
30:40.

According to Antonio Loprieno, the Egyptian cognate of Semitic *h.mm,
"to become hot", is Egyptian h_mm, $mm, and was apparently articulated
as รง, a voiceless palatal fricative.
