Frankly, I don't know much about software, but I would encourage
scholars that do like to have their software optimised to try Linux.
As the Linux source code is public and the kernel can be altered by
anyone, this would be the ideal system to optimise, for example, for
Hebrew input methods.
Linux can be run with so called uninstalled Live-cd version, such as
Ubuntu, Knoppix, or many other distributions, and even the desktop
environment is interchangeable, for example you choose between KDE,
Gnome, and more. Linux can also be installed ("dual boot") side by
side with MSWindows. A system like SuSE Linux 10.1 is just as easy,
maybe easier, to install and use, as MSWindows.
I will leave my propaganda at this, after having mentioned that even
the network of the Microsoft building runs Linux, just as most of the
internet servers.
If anyone would like some links, just let me know. I am not a
shareholder in any company ;)
Best regards,
Herman
