According to the BDB the possible etymological connection is the Arab.
root S (sin) FX; one of its meanings is "to commit fornication". Its main
meaning is "to shed "(tears) or "to spill" (blood).

Hi all,
Does anyone think that there might be a connection between the words $pxh
(shifxah - a female slave or "handmaiden", more or less the same as "amah")
and m$pxh (mishpaxah - an extended family, clan or phratry)? What is know
about the etymology of the two words?
Thanks,
Yigal

Yigal,
K&B under m$pxh lists Ugaritic $px and Punic #px. J.Huehnergard* glosses
$px as "sprout, scion." The article in K&B on $pxh leaves your question in
the doubtful category.
