Dear Yigal

While I agree with George's statement below, what do you do with 1 Chr.
7:20-28, ...

HH: A rather simple solution to this problem is to understand Ephraim in v. 22 as a different Ephraim from the one in verse 20.

1Chr. 7:20 And the sons of Ephraim; Shuthelah, and Bered his son, and Tahath his son, and Eladah his son, and Tahath his son,
1Chr. 7:21 And Zabad his son, and Shuthelah his son, and Ezer, and Elead, whom the men of Gath that were born in that land slew, because they came down to take away their cattle.
1Chr. 7:22 And Ephraim their father mourned many days, and his brethren came to comfort him.

HH: From the first Shuthelah (v. 20) to the second Shuthelah (v. 21) there are six generations. Ezer and Elead would be named before their father Ephraim, who would be a namesake descendant of the original Ephraim.

One problem with your solution, Harold, and also with George's, is that Joshua son of Nun seems to be descended from this Beriah son of Ephraim. That rules out these event as taking place after the Conquest, unless vv. 21b-24 are taken as an interpolation.

George's suggestion that this might have taken place before the Israelites went into Egypt doesn't work, because Ephraim was only a young child when this happened.
