This is from _The Book of Hebrew Script: History, Palaegography, Script
Styles, Calligraphy & Design_ by Ada Yardeni [(c) 2002, Carta, Jerusalem]:
p. 220
" A few manuscripts from Egypt, and especially from Fustat (old Cairo), where
a large Jewish community existed, show definite characteristics of a
semi-cursive 'Eastern' hand. This script is represented here by a document
from
Fustat dating from the year 1100, ... Each letter appears in several vaiant
forms.
There are no ornaments and almost no ligatures, except for that of 'Alef and
Lamed."
