However, should we be so surprised of such a find at this time.?
The find was reported to come from east of the Temple Mount, which would be
the
Kidron Valley area.

Recent Developments in the News regarding the Temple Mount
Gathered from Various Sources. Last updated January 12, 2003.
Beginning in early 1998, Arafat's Waqf has permitted large-scale bulldozing
and destruction of the Temple Mount antiquities. Thousands of tons of fill
have been unearthed and simply dumped into the nearby Kidron Valley.
Archeologists have verified these artifacts date from the period of the First
Temple [circa 1006 BC (BCE) to 586 BC (BCE)].

This would also indicate
a) why it didn't come from a "dig", the deficiencies of the Israeli Gov't to
allow the Waqf desecrations
b) nobody officially following up on the "dump sites", leaving it to
individual and small group
scavengers or perhaps we should call the precious artifact savers,
These folks were threatened with arrest.... while the Israeli officials
basically did nothing

This doesn't demonstrate authenticity or not, but gives a good explanation
why such an artifact
could be found at this time, at that place, in an unofficial, antiquities
market, manner.
