Dear Moon-Ryul,
My mag. art thesis is entitled: "Imperfect consecutive and the Verbal
system of biblical Hebrew". It is unpublished, but I will send you a floppy
disk (Mac) with the thesis at the first opportunity.
In the discussions of aspect, both on this list and on b-greek, there is a
fundamental question which never has been directly addressed, namely: Is
there a relationship between aspect ant time (particularly event time)?;
(Alan Hultberg indirectly touched the question in a very fine post on
b-greek today). A question which is related is: Can we by help of aspect
pinpoint the *objective nature* of an event or state, or is aspect simply a
subjective expression on the same plane as modality?
Different persons may give different answers to these questions, but I
would go so far as to say that those who have not struggled with these
questions, thus realizing the nature of the questions, only can have an
imperfect understanding of the nature of Hebrew and Greek aspect.
Because of your keen interest in an accurate understanding of the biblical
text, I will also refer to my book: "The role of Theology and Bias in Bible
Translation With a Special look at The New World Translation of Jehovah's
Witnesses", 1999, Elihu books. This book is about Bible translation, and it
discusses how the Bible can be translated in order for Bible readers to get
as close as possible to the original text only by help of their mother
tongue. It has also in-depth linguistic analyses of particular key-passages
and a 30-page Excursus on Greek and Hebrew verbs. You may order the book at
