The form is not inapproriate. It's entirely approriate, beautifully
approriate. Gen 42:8 is an abrupt transition to the previous time that at
first appears to be at odds with the verbal system. Please see the post I
wrote to Dave and the articles I cite there. I would also suggest
Longacre's _Joseph_(1989), _The Grammar of Discourse_(1983), and "The
Discourse Structure of the Flood Narrative"(1979) on the issue of marking
peak in narrative.

If these are impossible for you to get, let me know and I'll send some
example texts your way (off-list maybe?).
