Hello Matthew.

My bibliography on the subject is not comprehensive, but I'll be glad to
send you what I have, if you like. Let me know.

It seems to me that the field is ripe for a move away from the "canonical"
orientation of the past 25 years or so. What will be next I do not know,
although I suspect it will involve more of a recognition of the historical
character of the Psalter, as opposed to the almost exclusively "literary"
treatment it's gotten lately.

In any case, your quotation is undeniably correct. No scholar that I can
think of takes the psalm headings as representing historical reality. On
the other hand, some interesting and fruitful attempts have been made to
make sense of the superscripts as literary phenomena apart from their
dubious historical character.

Gday,

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a good bibliography on the
canonical shape of the Psalter. What do people think of the works of
Wilson, Eaton, Arens, and Gillingham's works? And finally, is Day's comments
"There is now general agreement that [the psalm] headings should not be
taken as factually authentic" in JSOT OT Guide accurate? Who are the
dissenters?

Thanks for your help. With regards,
Matthew Anstey
