dear matt,
your questions show such promise, and I want to encourage you to
pursue hebrew grammar. was thinking of you. if you remember, I was
suggesting you pick up some formal semantics as a backdoor into
generative linguistics. that de Swart book is a not a bad place to
start as it turns out, a good springboard to bigger and better things.
if you want to embrace verbal semantics, I might suggest looking at
Pustejovsky 1995, The Generative Lexicon. this might look daunting,
but it's a *goal* to work towards. the important thing here for a
promising hebrew scholar is the decided turn to computational
linguistics. so bone up on some techie stuff too. 21st-cent hebrew grammar
is going to look a whole lot different than what passes for it now.
;-)
also, you might be interested in the other major orientation
represented by a quick and dirty intro, Corpus Linguistics:
Investigating Structure and Use, 1998, Cambridge. again, stats and
computation.
just some thoughts. wishing you all the best in your studies.
