Dear Paul,
The root ykl which expresses ability is an odd one. Its sense in a
particular use often requires the an examination of the context to
determine what the subject is or is not able *to do* because the specific
ability is not explicitly stated. For instance,

ability to gain: Hos 8:5
ability to do: Job 42:2
ability to reach: Psa 139:6
ability to overcome: 1 Ki 22:22

So in Isa 1:13 the context suggests inability *to endure.*

As to what was intolerable, I think it was, as you have suggested, both
things together, in effect, one thing: the composite of sinfulness and
solemn assembly, otherwise known to us as hypocrisy. btw, 'aven is an
interesting study.
