As long as you mark it binary and you do not expect CVS to merge changes
automatically, it should work just fine. I frequently hold compiled JARs
and GIFs/JPEGs in my CVS repository without problem. That is, if you do
not forget to add the file with the -kb flag... But that's another
matter...

For an alternative, use Subversion (http://subversion.tigris.org).
Unfortunately, java.net does not use Subversion at the moment...
