Brian,
For a beekeeper with some experience behind him/her, I recommend The Queen Must Die (and other affairs of bees and men) by William Longgood. It is out of print, but you can find it on abebooks.com at very reasonable prices.

The Queen Must Die is a book for beekeepers and for people who appreciate what we do as beekeepers. It explains our fascination with bees. The author is a Pulitzer Prize winning journalist who accidentally inherited hives from his communal living son. In essence, he was an accidental beekeeper. But in the process of becoming a committed beekeeper he explores his (and our) fascination with bees and the social order of bees. He clearly loves bees and makes no apologies for the anthropomorphic gloss of his writing. It is a thoroughly enjoyable read and provides an in-depth (sometimes philosophical) understanding of what is going on in a bee colony.

The Queen Must Die is not an academic text. Its purpose is not formal education, but rather to confirm that we as beekeepers are granted an extraordinary opportunity to witness and share in the lives of bees.

I recommend this book to beekeepers and non-beekeepers without reservation! See http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/452143.The_Queen_Must_Die_and_Other_Affairs_of_Bees_and_Men where it gets a rating of 4.2 out of 5 for more insight.

Hello All,

I am considering purchasing a book for a beekeeping friend of mine.  I think he already has "the Hive and the Honeybee" and the "ABC & XYZ of Bee Culture".  Has anyone read and can recommend Dewey Caron's "Honey Bee Biology and Beekeeping"?  It looks like a wonderful book.  It's sort of expensive, though so it would be nice to know something about it before I purchase it.

Thanks,
Lanette
