Lanette,

A classic honey bee biology text that I have always found to be very useful is Mark Winston's The Biology of the Honey Bee. It is often cited by authors of journal articles. The only (slight) drawback is that it is a little old, originally published in 1987, so doesn't have any mention of varroa mites. However as a pure honey bee biology book (anatomy, physiology, behavior), it is excellent. You can get it on Amazon for $8.87 to $24.97.

A couple of years ago, I asked noted author Ann Harmon what beekeeping book I should recommend to beginners. She said that, without question, for both beginners and experienced beekeepers, she would strongly recommend the latest edition of Dianna Sammataro's The Beekeeper's Handbook. I do not have a copy but you can give me one for Christmas if you like. You can get it in paperback on Amazon for around $19.

I do not have a copy of Dewey Caron's Honey Bee Biology and Beekeeping, but I have flipped through it. It seems perfectly nice but I don't think it is a must-have, especially at around $60. It was one of the choices I asked Ann about and she didn't give it a second thought, quickly recommending The Beekeeper's Handbook instead.

If you want to give your friend a very interesting bee-related book that doesn't have anything to do with bee science or proper management, I recommend Douglas Whynott's Following the Bloom. Written by a guy who traveled with several large migratory beekeepers over a season, it is an extremely fascinating and amusing description of how commercial beekeeping works in America. You can pick it up on Amazon starting at 41 cents.

Hello All,

I am considering purchasing a book for a beekeeping friend of mine.  I think he already has "the Hive and the Honeybee" and the "ABC & XYZ of Bee Culture".  Has anyone read and can recommend Dewey Caron's "Honey Bee Biology and Beekeeping"?  It looks like a wonderful book.  It's sort of expensive, though so it would be nice to know something about it before I purchase it.

Thanks,
Lanette
