Doreen,There is an orchard not too far north of you, in Burlington WI
(Burnham Woods Orchard?) who hosted a field day for the Wisconsin apple
growers in 2010. There was some talk of heirlooms--he said he started out
with many of them-- and Sops of Wine came up. His reaction was as negative
as Gene Wild's, or maybe more so. He said his wife had a name for them, but
he wouldn't repeat it in public. They were soft, ugly, and flavorless.
This may not be the area for them. Having said that, it's possible that
Weston's Antique Apple Orchard has them; if they do you could try one next
fall and see what you think before committing. They also can do bench grafts
of the varieties they grow. I don't remember exactly where they
are--somewhere between Milw. and Madison--but I suspect they are on the web,
and even if they don't have a web page you could find contact info for them
from the Dane County Farmers' Market web site as they are long time members.
Long answer to a short question.Muffy BarrettSC Wisc. where it looks like our
winter that just got started is on its way out again. Highs in the mid 50s?
Sheesh.

Dear Group,

Gene Wild active NAFEX member for years has a collection of around 800
apple varieties. I asked him if he had Sops of Wine. Here was his reply:

I have Sops of Wine, however I would not recommend it. Maybe it is an
apple for a colder climate. It has never had any red coloring inside,
and has a nondescript flavor. Ken Dooley [deceased member of NAFEX] and I
agreed it was our poorest heirloom. I can supply cuttings if you like.

There is a source of scions if anyone still wants.

Jerry

Sops was also used as a cider apple in the UK for centuries. I can
provide scionwood if you strike out with other sources. It was one of
the very few English apples to thrive in northern New England in the
early days of colonial orcharding.
