Here at 7000 feet in New Mexico I have not been able to grow butternuts,
heartnuts, buartnuts, walnuts, etc. I've tried them all. Technically they
should be hardy in our zone but for some reason the young plants don't
overwinter. I don't know if it is the dry air, not being fully dormant during
part of the winter, sun exposure, high winds or ??.

If you have similar conditions, you may have the same problems.

I don't know if a more mature plant would not have these problems. I've never
been able to get them to survive long enough. I suppose if they got some
super protection for five years, that might do the trick.

That being said, I did get some walnuts from a NAFEX member in Colorado (don't
have her name on hand but my thanks to her) who claimed she had seeds that
would actually survive in our conditions. I've had partial success with them.

I planted some in three different spots on our property. One spot was
completely exposed, one moderately exposed and one was among other trees and
was protected.

The protected one has survived for three or four seasons now without ever
dying back.

The moderately protected site survived the first year but by the third year
was completely killed.

The exposed site plants were killed to the ground the first two years but grew
back strongly. The third winter I piled straw biles around and on top of
them. Some of the tops survived. On others there was stronger growth from
the base than in previous years.
