I agree

I took the liberty of highlighting the common factor in all the data points. Specifically, never let the to few inches of soil dry out completely.

I planted white clover in my lawn a few years ago. I had nothing but crabgrass in big patches. The problem with crabgrass is that it is an annual, and for a month in the spring, I had nothing but mud. I wanted anything tough and perennial - preferably something short and green and soft enough to walk on. I put down clover and a few kinds of grass seed. The clover took off first, and the next spring I had big patches of clover, and almost no mud.

The clover held its own against the grass for a couple of year, but last year we had a drought, and while I watered the blueberries and the raspberries, I figured the lawn would survive. This year, I have almost no clover - just strips near the irrigation. (And I have some small patches of crabgrass.)
