Hello Doreen,
Warren Manhart went through this exercise not that long ago in his
beautiful book "Apples for the 21th century". He selected 50 exceptionnal
varieties and the book is surely worth a look.
I will add to that some of my personnal favorites, as grown in my cold
canadian zone 4: Lobo, Cortland, Akane, Redfree, Honeygold.
