Whatever you do avoid those so called desensitizing clinics. The way to
develop a search horse is to ride. Ride like you are searching-- fully
tacked up, working clothes, task groups of 3 riders, etc. Ride as much as
you can, wherever you can. You must develop a trust with your mount. You
need to be able to detect clues when mounted, you need to be able to read
your horse, who as prey is much more alert normally than a dog, and much
more subtle in his behavior.

Your horse will read the ground and pick his footing so you don't have to
divert your eyes from the clues on the ground or surrounding terrain. He
will detect clues you may have missed or dismissed. The idea is not to get
him to ignore the world but to identify the object he sees, hears, smells,
and then decide whether it is important to the search and tell you about it.
