Like anything else you do with your horse it is a matter of adaption and training.  Begin using traction enhancers on dry ground and let the horse get the feel for them. Horses that are shod learn how their feet interact with the ground and often begin to rely on that extra stick.  If you go to borium or caulks or snow pads the day the snow shows up there is a possibility that the increased stopping power may surprise your mount and may cause some sticking in the turns and therefore cause some stress.

We have not had significant snow around here for years and my mount is currently barefoot after nearly 20 years with borium and studs year round – he has adapted to the less sticky mode fairly well.

One winter when we ice on the ground for 3 weeks straight I let him out into the exercise ring and he started to run because his shoes dug in to the ice.  When he went to stop he got a surprise and tried to stop with all four flat on the ice (as well as his butt). He slid through the locked gate, hit a patch of anti-skid, and ran to his stall. The look on his face as he approached the gate was priceless.
