If you're looking at forks in brick and mortar stores, look for one in which the tines and the rest of the metal head are all one piece of metal. This seems to indicate higher quality.

A $15 fork that bends or breaks in less than one season is not cheaper than an $85 fork (well, it was $75 when I bought it) that will outlive the person using it.
