One more word I forgot to mention regarding landscape fabric earlier. We did find that the suckers would lift the fabric a little in early spring when they first emerged, but they would quickly die back due to either heat or lack of sunlight. With well secured fabric, we have had very little trouble with the suckers causing any problems.

I have to weigh in - in favor of cardboard and straw or wood ships down the path.  Been doing this for eight years, and lovin' it.  Keeps the weeds down, attracts worm (the wet paper, esp.) that digest the stuff and give me a new inch of good soil, which I heap up on the raised beds, every couple years.

IT's my understanding, Pam, that landscape cloth will not keep
suckers and runners from emerging because they do not rely on direct
light for their energy source, so...you wind up with emerging plants
lifting your fabric and a hell of a mess. Not saying this from
experience, only from what I was told when I put in my berry patches.

I'm considering buying landscape fabric for "permanent" aisle mulching in
raspberries and blueberries. I've never used the stuff before, so I'd welcome
hearing others' experience. Sounds like the woven sort would be more
durable than the non-woven, yes? Which brands have worked well, or poorly
for folks? Where can I get good prices? Any tips about installing
it. I plan to
put drip tape underneath, and sawdust or wood chips on top, to keep
sunlight off, and maximise its life. Any comments, anyone?
