Not from what I have heard. I have grown it also. I get around six or seven pieces to the pound. I have planted little pieces, but always got little pieces. Save the biggest pieces for seed and eat the others.

I dug some elephant garlic today and found some small cloves. Can I
plant these now and expect to have large cloves by next June?
