I was out of town when your question came in, so I am late getting around to
a response.

I think you can get some help on your question from B. Hudson McLean, _The
Cursed Christ: Mediterranean Expulsion Rituals and Pauline Soteriology_
(JSNTSup 126; Sheffield Academic Press, 1996). The first three chapters are
the most useful, and chapters 2 and 3 bear on your question. McLean
emphasizes the scapegoat ritual of Lev. 16 as a framework for interpreting
Paul's metaphor here.
