Without buying into Jim Hester's comments about the 'stultifyingly boring'
nature of studying Paul's view of the law, his further suggestion got me
thinking. He wrote:

<Surely someone on the list could recommend a far more interesting topic
that would lead to a really exciting dissertation! What about it, group?>

A topic has grabbed my attention in the preparation of my own dissertation
but I have not been able to pay sufficient attention to it. It is the
content and background of Paul's 'gospel'. I don't mean what scholars
normally imply by the word 'gospel' - the heart of Paul's theology as
evidenced by the main body of the core epistles - I mean the apostle's
primary proclamation, or missionary message; that collection of
Messianic-events, theological propositions and ethical instuctions which
Paul felt constituted the traditions of first importance for non-believers,
but which only receive passing reference in the epistles. There are
sufficient hints of this 'primary proclamation' in Paul's epistles to make
such a study viable, I believe. One could also compare the findings with
other traditions (Q, Luke-Acts, etc.).
