Hi Pindar,

Wow, you guys really discuss a lot of issues in the meeting.

But as I remember that the key of starting the project is to identify
a legal lead first, any potential candidates nominated from the
meeting? Any plan to contact those candidates?

Thanks,
Uta

Hi,

As you can imagine our brief lunch discussion last week was both
high-level and wide-ranging, so I've tried to put some structure
around it in the summary notes FWIW below.

Thanks much,

Date: Friday May 11th 2007
Start Time: 13:00
End Time: 14.20 (Charles Mok left at 14.00)
Venue: Union American Bar & Grill, IFC, HK
Attendees:
Rebecca MacKinnon
Charles Mok
Laikwan Pang

There was a sense that:

1) Although there is anecdotal evidence that HK is already using the
existing Creative Commons license, our community might benefit
further from
1.1) the legal clarity provided by having a locally ported version
of the generic 3.0 license,
1.2) the educational, promotional and other activities essential to
encourage its adoption and use,
1.3) participating in the wider Creative Commons' discussions and
debates,
1.4) the legitimacy provided by the existing Creative Commons
structure.

2) Although there appears to be no absolute time, or an established
timetable, by which a Creative Commons Hong Kong (CCHK) *must* be
formed, it was nevertheless felt:

2.1) that the time is right to gauge the need, and prepare a launch
for, a Creative Commons Hong Kong and

\ 2.2) that systematic planning and organization of effort might help
minimize the risks ( and maximize the chances of success) of not
just the launch, but the ultimate success of the intiative

2.3) that in the short-term it is essential to
2.3.1) review the legal documentation,
2.3.2) identify a Project Lead and Institution,
2.3.3.) quantify, and secure, the necessary resources and
'infrastructure' (e.g. people's time, money, support, attention etc.)
and
2.3.4) have the support of those who would move to/or will
soon
use the HK license

2.4) that 2 Quarters (i.e. 6 months) would not be an unreasonable
estimate of time to launch CCHK (i.e. by the end of 2007)

2.5) that an initial 'guestimate' of funding requirements was
modest (e.g. in the order of a few hundred thousand HK Dollars) and
2.5.1) there could be several sources of such funding (e.g.
private
sector, wealthy individuals, HK Government etc) and
2.5.2) several models of organisational support, structure and
operation.

3) Therefore it should be suggested to the cchk mailing list that a
1st formal face-to-face meeting of an 'organising committee' per se,
be held as soon as convenient.
3.1) It was understood that the earliest convenient time for such a
meeting would be in July 2007? and
3.2) that it would be especially helpful to have someone from
Creative Commons, who has deep experience with such porting and
start-up issues, participate in some way at this meeting
3.3) that those who are already use/interested/aware of, Creative
Commons be encouraged to participate in our activities (especially
the end users who are currently absent from the discussion).
3.4) that, if possible, detailed strawmen business models and plans
be developed and discussed at this meeting.

4) In the meantime, it would be particularly helpful to clarify

4.1) The existing number, and type of, user already using the CC
License in HK,
4.2) Detailed mechanics and resource requirements for launch, and
initial actvities
4.3) thoughts on the business model and plan.

5) As far as 4) above, there is the possibility of Yat visiting the
CC Berlin office, in the next fortnight, when he's in Germany. So it
would be good to surface issues as soon as possible.
