The only way I can get it to boot on this laptop is
to install lilo to MBR. I hope I can have at least
two small different linuces and perhaps FreeDOS on
the laptop HD of 1.1 GB.

In that case I suggest you put FreeDOS on the first
partition (drive C:) and make it the default boot.
Then you can use loadlin.exe (from DOS) to boot the
other partitions. It will also give you the option
of running Linux from a loop file on C: (eg the DOS
version of BL3).

You can make the freedos partition large enough to install the loop BL3 (about 25MB), which is helpful for rescue if you screw up the ext2 one, or to experiment on.

You can also install lilo to a boot floppy disk. I did this for one computer where Xvesa won't work if you boot with loadlin even bypassing config.sys with F5. Then I can either boot directly to DOS without the boot floppy (and thence to linux without Xvesa), or put in the boot floppy and boot to linux (or set it up with a menu to choose between linuxes, with one of the linuxes as the default).
