I really don't know I'm afraid. With 1.4 you're using the Crimson parser and a very old Xalan. If you're not using XSLT you don't have to worry about Xalan.

Crimson bugs may relate to validation and entities, which you may not need. However it's been a while since I looked into that, so I'm not sure.

Really, you just have to run your own tests and see if anything breaks. You can also try XOM's test suite after removing Xalan and Xerces.
