hello everyone,
i hope you're all having a wonderful labor day. i have some very exciting and timely news: yek koo will be performing a set live on WXYC today at 4 pm as part of her current tour called RADIO CONCEPT TOUR. here's some info she sent us about it:
For this tour I am performing live to air on radio stations only - no shows at actual venues. The purpose of the RADIO CONCEPT TOUR is to investigate a sound concept without exposure to the 'missing element' - the contact between audience and performer. My current live incarnation was developed for radio only and explores the relationship between body, microphone and air movement. It features vocal feedback, free jazz influenced horn exclamations and sparse rhythms moving with and against each other in space.
the performance is sure to be engaging + provocative - i'm personally really excited to listen! yek koo's performance will also be followed by an interview / conversation with WXYC's station manager, Olivia B.
here's some more info about yek koo:
TUNE IN TO WXYC @ 4pm to hear this artist on-air. turn your dial to 89.3fm or stream live at wxyc.org/listen!yek koo is the solo project of visual and performing artist Helga Fassonaki (half of free psych duo Metal Rouge), often appearing in a ragged stripped-down cloak of distorted guitar, wailing vocals, pocket trumpet and non-kosher samples. Originally from Los Angeles, she recently relocated to the East Coast where her latest LP, 'Desolation Peak' was recorded - a classic example of yek koo’s unruly rhythm logic and haunting vocals. She has performed at Hammer Museum’s Made in LA part of KCHUNG TV’s Crystalline Morphologies, Open Melody Festival at UC Irvine (CA), Ear&Eye Festival (Auckland, NZ), On Land Festival (San Francisco), Human Resources (LA), Public Fiction (LA), Whitney Biennial 2012 (NYC), and a multitude of other galleries and venues throughout the United States, United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. More recently, an album from her duo project Metal Rouge was included in the Public Collector’s exhibit in the 2014 Whitney Biennial. Residing in Brooklyn, New York, Fassonaki is currently preparing a Sonic Postcard of static sounds from a project she worked on during an artist residency in Oaxaca, Mexico to be broadcast on AFM, a radio station of New Zealand’s Audio Foundation.
