Summer's starting here at WXYC which means 1). A new schedule 2). New DJs 3). Sweating in the control room 4). Swimming pool in the rock CDs room.  It also means a little less than you'd expect from these emails, but I have to say...there's some great stuff lined up for the week.  Check it out!

Weather's getting warm and everyone's starting to smell a bit ripe. So stay in and listen to The Inside Track tonight alone or with a few understanding friends at 9:00 pm sharp. We'll be playing Zea's recent release, The Swimming City, out now on Makkum Records. Since 2008 Zea has been the solo project of Arnold De Boer, singer and guitarist for Dutch anarcho punk band The Ex (and a native Frisian speaker! Neat!) This is Zea’s fifth album,  and it follows years of extensive touring around the world, including in Ethiopia and Ghana, where the Ex have found many friends and like-minded musicians. Hard-nosed punk and no wave that have mellowed just a bit; electronic beatmaking; sound sampling; Ethiopian Azmari and afrobeat vibes weaving in and out of these tracks. Funky and angry and uncompromising.

This week tune into the New Science Experience to hear DJ Rashad tribute set from WXYC DJ Alex B.  Rashad, a footwork/juke pioneer and one of the founders of the Teklife crew, passed away on Saturday at the age of 34.  His most recent album Double Cup was well received and featured on WXYC's top 20 albums of 2013.

Tune in Sunday at 1pm for some archival recordings culled from Wilson Library’s Southern Folklife Collection on Hell Or High Water.  This week, explore the works of Artus Monroe Moser.  Moser (1894-1992), writer, educator, and historian, spent much of his life collecting ballads in and around his home in Western North Carolina in an effort to document the folk traditions of Appalachia. Moser wrote extensively about the folk songs, folklore, and history of Appalachia, and recorded numerous Appalachian performers onto acetate discs. In 1945, the Library of Congress provided Moser with the equipment to collect and record more material, which was later placed in the LC's Archive of American Folk Song.  Check some of these recordings out this week on WXYC!

Join us at 2pm on Sunday Afternoon for an hour long exploration intro strange sounds and noises on Broken Music.  It’s the best time of the week to appreciate the sounds of a seemingly broken radio with some of the most strange and unfamiliar compositions we can find.  Join DJ Evan this week for a great hour of radio.

From 9 to 10PM the Sports Rap crew will be talking about the NBA playoffs, the death of Rufus the Bobcat, the Donald Sterling story, and more! Tune in and participate! @dunksbutts!

At 9:00 pm on Monday we'll be queuing up The Outside Track, which this week will be the latest release from Christian Fennesz, Becs. The last time Fennesz, Austrian guitarist and electronic musician, released an album on Mego was in 2001 and that album was Endless Summer. Now he’s back on Editions Mego with his first full length release since 2008.  Bécs (Hungarian for Vienna) departs from some of his more recent guitar-manipulated-into-ethereal-drones stuff in favor of the electronics drippy, disjointed contemporary pop like from way back in 2001.
