Spring's warmth is upon us! The relief is palpable and you can practically hear the sap flowing in those trees and flowzers. Turn on the Inside Track this Friday (tonight!) at 9:00 pmand join us in praise; we'll be spinning the new Light In The Attic release, Dylan's Gospel. This reissue of a 1969 Ode Records release features 28 Los Angeles session singers performing gospel versions of Bob Dylan songs. The project was conceived and produced by Lou Adler, who sought to recreate a church sound on the recording. Tracks are given a whole new sense of power and energy, and the lead vocalists (almost all of whom are women) are, for the most part, brilliant. The collection ends up sounding like a wonderfully cathartic outpouring of emotion while also being just really fun. Very powerful and highly recommended.
Listen to The Orange County Special this Sunday (10am to 1pm) for a chance to win a tix to two shows. First is a very special show at the Nightlight on Monday night at 8 featuring the Malian n'goni master, Cheick Hamala Diabate. Born into a griot family (his first cousin is kora master Toumani Diabate and his uncle was legendary SUPER RAIL BAND guitarist, Djelimady Tounkara) in Kita, Mali, this grammy-nominated musician, historian, and storyteller has been performing in the US since the mid-90s. check his website: http://cheickhamala.com/. (The n'goni is a lute-shaped, banjo-related, stringed instrument from West Africa.) Also see https://www.facebook.com/events/1412823425644551/
We'll also be giving away a pair of tix to see Paddy Keenan, the Irish piper who first gained fame as a founding member of The Bothy Band. Dónal Lunny, a Bothy Band-mate, described him as “the Jimi Hendrix of the pipes while others compare him to John Coltrane due to his genius for improvisation and counter melody, his musicianship in Irish and other styles of music from bluegrass to jazz, his sheer driving power. Paddy Keenan will be playing at The ArtsCenter in Carrboro on Wednesday, April 16th. Also see http://www.artscenterlive.org/events/paddy-keenan/ & listen in, to win!
This week DJ Kiever Hunter will feature the music of jazz artist and performer, Ethel Waters. Waters was born in Chester, Pennsylvania at the close of the 19th century and began to find fame as a blues singer. However, as her career evolved, Northern born Waters felt comfortable performing in varying distinctly Southern sounds like Gospel and Blues while also toying with the sounds of Vaudeville, 20s Pop, and Broadway stage tunes. Be sure to tune in to hear the distinct voice of this genre bending virtuoso.
This week DJ Jeremy K is looking at the career of J. Bernard. A classically trained bass player at the Oberlin Conservatory of Music, he calls his music pop. I will trace the progression form his first album, a tape manipulation piece recorded when he was 13, to his acoustic rock release in 2011. His label, Teenage Prayer, hosts his own releases as well as those from other artists around North Carolina.
From 9 to 10PM Sunday don't miss Sports Rap--your weekly dose of chit-chat on the radio. This week the team will be recapping the 2013-2014 basketball seasons for UNC's men's and women's team, forecasting the 2014-2015 seasons, talking NCAA tournament, and previewing WXYC's upcoming kickball match against WXDU. Listen and participate @dunksbutts!
It might be getting warm outside, but if you're like your chakras are still blocked with ice and snot. Flip on the Outside Track this Monday at 9:00 pm for some transcendental healing with Crown of Eternity's new release, Vibrate the Cosmos. C of E is a brand new collaboration between Pittsburgh-based guitarist/collecter of gongs/yoga guru/all around great human being Mike Tamburo and his equally charming wife Gallino. Both own and operate a vibrational healing center in Pittsburgh of the same name and created this set of mesmerizing long-form mantras as both a soundtrack to their healing sessions as well as a simultaneously soothing and engaging set of free-form improvisations, featuring acoustic guitar, production, shahi baaja (the type of Indian zither featured on Tamburo's 2012 Brother Ong release) and layered chanting.
