As we gear up for the nuclear winter that will surely follow tomorrow's UNC/NCST basketball game, our desolate heels turn the dial down to 89.3 in search of a soundtrack. It is here on WXYC that they (and you, dear reader) find out that:

On the Inside Track tonight (Friday) at 9pm we will hear the new compilation Strange Passion: Explorations in Irish Post Punk, DIY, and Electronic Music 1980-83 out on Finders Keepers/B Music. This is a titillating compilation of early 80's Irish music that is either pretty punk or has pretty synths {or both!!!}.

Then, keep it locked at 10pm when NSE is getting settled into its new Friday night slot and we're feelin' it pretty hard.  This week: One Duran (Darren H) will bring an hour of UK House. Yugen (TJ W) will deliver a 30 min live PA of house and techno, followed by a selection of some of the best recent stateside techno. The perfect soundtrack to your Friday night.

Then, Sunday at 1 on Hell or High Water Gina B will be playing a 1970s recording of stories, advice, and general talking by Mississippi native Ray Lum (1891-1977), a mule skinner, livestock trader, and auctioneer.  A west Texas newspaper reported his fame this way: "He is known all over cow country for his honest fair dealing and gentlemanly attitude..... A letter addressed to him anywhere in Texas probably would be delivered." He sounds like this (!!!!):  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TEsB0S6xXYM

This Sunday's Broken Music features works by Swiss composer Pierre Mariétan. While initially a serialist composer, during the 1960's Mariétan's work shifted toward an approach that intersected composition and improvisation, performed largely by the GERM ensemble, which he led. His output since the 1970's has sought to incorporate composed music with environmental sounds, essentially pairing music of the interior with music of the exterior. The show begins at 2 pm.

Lots to talk about on this week's SportsRap Sunday at 9, as the panel recaps the basketball team's games against Georgia Tech and Nc State from the week, analyzing the contests, while previewing upcoming ACC play for the Heels. Also on the show, the group previews next week's Super Bowl, with game prediction's and analysis of the season. And lastly, the panel breaks down the 2012-2013 NBA All Star selections and recap the year so far. All that and more on Sportsrap.

Finally, Monday on the Outside Track, check out the new compilation New Music for Old Instruments, which is a stunning set of new tracks compiled by preeminent lutist Jozer Van Wissem on his own label Incunabulum. basically some pretty big-name instrumentalists playing instruments as ancient as reproduction of a 14th century swan neck lute but as ‘new’ as a 40-year old Farfisa organ. Beautiful contributions from, among others, station favorites like Susan Alcorn, Cam Deas, C. Spencer Yeh, Stephan Matthieu and R. Kenan Lawler.

Tar!
JJ
