BROADCAST, "Haha Sound," on the Inside Track, Wednesday 9 p.m.
Second album from these UK pop sophisticates further hones their craft of
making vintage torch ballads, waltztime scenery, and tense noir
atmospheres into modern gumdrops-and-lollipops honest-to-goodness pop
delicacies. Out on Warp Records.
COWPOKE MUSIC on the Thursday Night Feature, Thursday 7 p.m.-midnight
Tune in this week to hear songs from your favorite cowboys and girls!
HOODOO REFERENCES IN BLUES MUSIC on Hell or High Water, Sunday 1 p.m.
Tune in this week for Part Two of Hoodoo References in Blues Music:
Fortune Tellers, Black Gypsies and Magic Spells. Blues lyrics provide a
primary source of information about the practice of Hoodoo, an extensive
system of African-American folk magic often confused with the Haitian
religion of Voodoo. The topic has been split into two parts and relies
mainly on blues recordings from the 1920s-30s. Subjects covered include:
mojo hands and good luck amulets, signs of bad luck, jinxes, dream
divination systems, fortune telling and conjure work, and other Hoodoo
beliefs. Most importantly we will learn about gambling, revenge, love
gone bad, and ways to get ahead in life.
CLANG QUARTET on the Backyard Barbeque, Sunday 7 p.m.
This week, we will be joined by Greensboro's Scotty Irving, aka
CLANG QUARTET. Formerly drummer for Geezer Lake, CLANG QUARTET is
Irving's one-man performance art extravaganza wherein he bangs on a whole
battery of percussives and speaks out on his religious faith. If we're
lucky he'll make some noise in the studio; if not, catch him live at
Nightlight Friday, September 12 with Polynya and Tom Heasley!
Also this week and every week:
-ORANGE COUNTY SPECIAL: traditional and neo-traditional music of the
world, Sunday 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
-BROKEN MUSIC: longer, more "difficult" pieces, Sunday 3-4 p.m.
