SIGNER, "Low Light Dreams" on the Inside Track, Wednesday 9 p.m.
Signer is New Zealand producer Bevan Smith, who with this, his Carpark
Records domestic debut, explores an idiosyncratic approach to musicality
he describes 'nu-indie': equal parts isolationist ambient on the order
of
Seefeel, dubby techno that takes cues from the Chain Reaction stable or
somesuch, and the more malleable elements of IDM. If this synthesis
sounds
old hat, like something you'd have heard six months ago, you must be
thinking of some other record. This one is nothing less than state of
the
art gorgeous.

JAM BANDS on the Thursday Night Feature, Thursday
9 p.m.-midnight
This week's TNF is a jamboree. Hear old jam band favorites like the
Dead and Phish along with up and coming bands like Moe, The Disco
Biscuits, Galactic, Lake Trout and many many more.

MICHAEL HURLEY, "Sweetkorn" on the Inside Track, Friday 9 p.m.
New recordings from legendary 60s throwback folk hobo Michael Hurley,
aka
Doc Snock, whose tunes have been covered by universal faves like Cat
Power
and Yo La Tengo to name but two. A reflective and meloncholy session he
delivers here, backed a full ensemble called the Celestials which
features the singing and piano exploits of former Raleigh-ite Dana
Kletter. Out on the Trikont label of Germany.

HELL OR HIGH WATER, Sunday 1-2 p.m.
This week on Hell or Highwater: sinful songs and spirituals. We'll
explore an hour's worth of minstrel, blues, spirituals and gospel music.

MAGMA, "Attahk" on the Classic Inside Track, Sunday 2-3 p.m.
Christian Vander and his space-savvy cohorts team up for another battle
with their intergalactic foes in this fantastic album put out in 1978.
Magma has been a major influence on the avant-prog scene of the past
several decades through their invention of the zeuhl genre, but here
delve into more accessible brands of music. Tune in and hear what
happens when funk, prog rock, gospel, R&B, and psychedelia come together
in the mind of a French genius.

Various Artists, "GONGS: VIETNAM - LAOS" on the Inside Track, Monday 9
p.m.
The French imprint Playasound scores once more with this fascinating
collection of performances on flat gongs and bossed gongs by ensembles
in
Vietnam and Laos, in celebratory and ritual contexts. Timbres, tone
colors
and combinations of sound the likes of which we have never before heard,
but might have suspected existed somewhere. Maybe someplace like where
they have all those gamelan things.
